Charlottesville Group Pushes Leaders to Link Climate Goals with Energy Equity

August 18, 2020

Award-winning reporter Elizabeth McGowan from the Southeast Energy News Network interviewed Susan Kruse, Caetano de Campos Lopes, and Laura Goldblatt to produce this in-depth article on our Uncovering Energy Inequity report, its findings, and how we hope it will kickstart solutions that address both affordable housing, climate and equity in our community. She also highlights our work more broadly: our C3, LEAP, and Charlottesville and Housing Advisory committee VEEP initiative (an incentive program to help bring energy efficiency to both Charlottesville rental property owners and low-income voucher tenants); and Susan Kruse’s work on the Virginia Clean Energy Advisory Board, tasked with bolstering solar opportunities for low-income residents. New Report Reveals Where Charlottesville’s Energy Burden Households Reside

(Cville Tomorrow)

July 30, 2020

This article highlights some of the findings of our Uncovering Energy Inequity report released July 29, 2020. “Laura Goldbatt, of the Charlottesville Low-Income Housing Coalition, said that higher percentages of such a resident’s income going towards utility bills could mean the difference between taking on a second job or having available funds for other personal expenses. She noted that by mapping energy burdens in the area, targeted policy can be created to reduce emissions and enhance affordability  —  two prominent goals in ongoing local planning processes. “This report represents only the beginning of our understanding of how energy equity impacts our community and how climate and affordable housing policies help address it,” said Caetano de Campos Lopes, C3’s director of climate policy.

CBS19, NBC29, Sean Tubbs’ new community engagement podcast, and NPR also covered this story.
